Photographers! Can I ask your advice on cameras?
I'm looking to buy a high end point & shoot camera. Need something a bit smaller than a standard DSLR, and also hopefully a bit cheaper. Basically I want a good quality camera, with some/fully manual features, in a compact package. I love the colours produced by the Sigma DP1, but it's a little bit out of my price range. Then again, I've heard they're slow to take pictures, so might not be the best choice for me anyway.
Other cameras I've looked at include the Ricoh GR/GR 2, the Leica D-Lux 4 and the Lumix DMC-LX series. But I have no idea how to decide which would be best for me! Any thoughts, suggestions or recommendations would be much appreciated. For your information, I wish to use the camera for documenting my life etc, and also for artistic purposes.

Glad to see you've done your research. You are right that the Sigma produces brilliant images thanks to its massive sensor, but it only has a non interchangeable prime lens which is it's major tripping point.
I wouldn't recommend the Ricoh cameras particularly when the Panasonic LX and Canon G cameras are around. All of these cameras are really good in bright light conditions, but fall down in low light when you need higher ISO speeds.
So if you do mostly outdoor shots particularly with a tripod then the LX2/3 or Canon G7/9/10 are a good choice, noise doesn't factor, and you get brilliant depth of field. But if you want it to work in a nightclub then the Sigma will perform better.
Finally you could opt for the 'third way' with either a FourThirds or MicroFourThirds mount:
The Olympus E420/450 is an actual SLR camera, but with the Pancake lens on it isn't much larger than the Sigma, but you still have the option of putting a different lens on.
You also have on MicroFourThirds the relatively new Panasonic Lumix G1 and GH1, these aren't real SLRs but have similar handling to them have recieved good reviews from Practical Photographer magazine, their only concern being the price of it being similar to the Canon 500D and Nikon D5000, but if you need a relatively small camera that takes interchangeable lenses.
